Understanding Each Part of the IELTS Speaking Test

Part 1: Introduction & Interview – This part tests your ability to speak about familiar topics such as your hobbies, studies, or work. Provide clear and structured answers, and try to expand your responses with examples.

Part 2: Long Turn – You will be given a topic card and asked to speak for 1–2 minutes. Structure your answer with an introduction, main points, and conclusion. Use connectors like "firstly," "moreover," and "in conclusion" to improve coherence.

Part 3: Discussion – This part involves abstract questions related to Part 2. Practice expressing opinions, justifying ideas with examples, and using higher-level vocabulary. Avoid short answers and focus on clarity and fluency.

Additional Strategies to Improve Your Speaking Score
  • Think in English rather than translating from your native language.
  • Maintain appropriate intonation, stress, and rhythm to sound natural.
  • Practice with a partner or online speaking platforms to simulate real test conditions.
  • Stay calm, and do not worry about minor mistakes; focus on communicating your ideas clearly.
